September 29, 2024 at 11:03 amMy Dear Garth Brooks:
How could we forget how many wonderful performances at QPAC (_Carmen_! with the HORSE), or back in 1999, plumbing the depths of the many wonderful films of the time, such as _The Sixth Sense_ amongst others.
Your easy conversation and well-read mind made perfect foils for our playful group dynamics discussing the ins and outs of the various plot twists or other concepts. I, (Robert) met you quite late in life through Kay Ling and Gifay, I found your company both congenial and enlightening, and the perfect complement to my otherwise engineering-focused frameworks.
I won’t forget your reliably calm and insightful presence, and count myself fortunate that we all had a great time together at Brookfield Country Mart whilst we were consoling ourselves after the passing of KL’s mother just a couple of years ago.
You were always The Great Wong. Rest in Peace, and may your next journey be filled with many excellent books, films, and actors as befit your restless mind.
In loving consideration,
Robert, Kay Ling, and Gifay
PS: I’d never met a “real life” person named Garth before, so I couldn’t resist calling Ming “Garth Brooks” after the popular Country-Western singer. He was always a great sport and understood the context in which I applied the name to him.
I’ve no doubt he’d have been comfortable donning crisp leather cowboy boots and giving a great line dance with the best of them.

September 30, 2024 at 3:06 pmI’d like to express my deepest condolences to the Wong family for the loss of their brother, cousin and uncle. I have had the distinct pleasure and privilege to work alongside Garth for the past 3 years.
It has been a privilege to work with someone of his many years of experience in service to the community, through his volunteering and support work. He was generous with sharing his knowledges and mentoring his colleagues.
And it was a great pleasure because Garth brought his endless joyful energy to all the work he did, smiling and chuckling and joking even when his own health challenged him. He had a talent for making strangers feel welcome and at ease.
It is safe to say that his impact on our community and our organisation will never be forgotten, nor will the delicious meals he shared with thousands of people over the years.
We will miss you Garth
With love, Greg

October 2, 2024 at 12:38 pmTribute to Garth Wong October 2024
Garth Wong was a close friend of Brian Aitken when they met in Papua New Guinea, and the friendship continued when they both returned to Australia..
They both enjoyed travelling overseas together to places such as Egypt, Greece and Thailand during their PNG holidays. The photos are from Brian’s photo albums

I first got to know Garth well when Brian and I joined Garth and Mike Beck on a road trip from Sanford Valley overnighting in Tamworth, and continuing on to Mike’s sister’s home in Canberra.
Photo I took of Garth Mike and Brian in Warwick on the way. Dinner in Tamworth: Brian Garth and Mike.
When Brian moved into a house next to mine, we both enjoyed joining Garth’s ‘music’ group going to the Griffith University music students’ concerts. Brian sadly passed away in February this year, and Ken Lifu brought Garth to my home to share memories of Brian and to check out the photo albums Brian had made of their overseas trips together. I enjoyed catching up with Garth at Trevor’s home or when he visited Brian on Coochiemudlo.
Dinner at Trevor’s with Mike, Grant, Trevor and friends Willie, Garth, Brian and Duane at the Coochiemudlo golf course.
Garth was also a good friend of Trevor Robinson and visited Trevor weekly and was able to assist Trevor when needed. Garth was assisting the local Liberal member and Trevor and he met the former Prime Minister, John Howard and celebrated Trevor’s article in a book.

I enjoyed Garth’s visits to my home on Coochiemudlo Island. He would always bake a cake and be full of the latest stories of his political activities and his valuable support of those with HIV.

My condolences to Garth’s family and friends. We all miss him.
